The History of Barby Players

The Barby Players came into being in March 1948 under the Chairmanship of John Weston, but the founder members had been performing one act plays and meeting to read plays under the leadership of Mrs. Eva Mitchison since 1946.

Sadly Mrs. Mitchison died in February 1947 and the group formed a small company of players in her memory.

Now more than fifty years on we are still going strong. We have produced to date over 100 plays, reviews, and in the early days, pantomimes. We moved to the new Village Hall in 1972 where dressing room and backstage facilities are vastly superior to the cramped conditions in the old hall.

We are a happy group where everyone turns a hand to whatever is required. Actors and actresses paint scenery, find props, hang wallpaper, bang in nails and everyone takes a turn at doing front of house or prompting and serving refreshments. There is no such thing as "them and us" in the Barby Players.

Although we all find it great fun we also work hard to give our audiences an enjoyable night out by being as professional as we are able.
